Melanotan II, often inaccurately referred to as a "hexapeptide" (it is actually a cyclic heptapeptide), is a synthetic analog of the alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Its primary function is to mimic the body's natural hormone to stimulate melanogenesis (the production of melanin) in the skin, leading to skin tanning. It is also known for its off-target effects, including libido enhancement and potential appetite suppression.
